Maruti Suzuki Q1 FY27 Profit Falls as Costs Hurt Margins

Maruti Suzuki has announced its financial results for the first quarter of FY27. The company posted strong revenue growth and record vehicle sales during the quarter. However, higher raw material costs had a major impact on earnings. As a result, net profit declined, while operating margins also became weaker.

The latest results show that demand for Maruti Suzuki cars remained healthy. The company sold more vehicles than it did in the same period last year. It also improved its market share in India and continued to perform well in export markets. Even with these positives, rising costs reduced overall profitability.

The quarter presents a mixed picture. On one hand, the company achieved excellent sales numbers. On the other hand, cost pressure made it difficult to convert that growth into higher profits.

Net Profit Drops 10.8%

Maruti Suzuki reported a net profit of ₹3,352 crore during the first quarter of FY27. This was 10.8% lower than the profit reported in the same quarter last year.

The decline came even though the company earned much more revenue than before. Usually, higher sales help companies earn better profits. This time, however, the rise in expenses was much larger than the benefit from higher sales. That reduced the final earnings.

The result shows that sales growth alone does not always lead to profit growth. When production costs rise quickly, companies often face pressure on their bottom line.

Revenue Shows Strong Growth

While profit declined, revenue moved in the opposite direction. Maruti Suzuki reported revenue from operations of ₹52,456 crore, which was 35.9% higher than the same quarter last year.

This strong growth came mainly because the company sold more vehicles. Demand stayed healthy across several segments. Better sales volumes helped the company achieve one of its strongest revenue performances.

The rise in revenue clearly shows that customer demand remained solid despite changing market conditions.

EBITDA Declines During the Quarter

Maruti Suzuki reported EBITDA of ₹4,312 crore for the quarter. This figure was 14.5% lower than the year-ago period.

EBITDA is an important measure because it shows how much profit a company earns from its core business before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation. Investors use this number to understand operating performance.

A decline in EBITDA usually points to higher business expenses. In Maruti Suzuki’s case, rising input costs had a direct impact on operating earnings.

EBITDA Margin Falls to 8.22%

The company’s EBITDA margin came in at 8.22%, much lower than the level reported a year earlier.

The EBITDA margin tells investors how much operating profit a company earns from every rupee of revenue. A lower margin means costs have increased faster than sales.

Although Maruti Suzuki earned much higher revenue, the company could not protect its margins because production expenses rose sharply.

This was one of the biggest concerns in the quarterly report.

Higher Raw Material Costs Hurt Earnings

The main reason behind the weaker profit was the sharp rise in raw material costs.

Prices of important materials, including aluminium and several other inputs, increased during the quarter. Since these materials play a major role in vehicle production, higher prices directly increased manufacturing costs.

When companies spend more money to build each vehicle, overall profitability comes under pressure unless they raise selling prices by a similar amount.

In Maruti Suzuki’s case, higher costs reduced the benefit of strong sales growth.

Record Vehicle Sales Support Revenue

Even though profits declined, Maruti Suzuki achieved an important milestone during the quarter.

The company sold 682,724 vehicles, which was 29.3% higher than the same period last year. This became one of the highest quarterly sales figures in the company’s history.

The strong sales performance highlights the trust that customers continue to place in the Maruti Suzuki brand.

Good demand across different vehicle categories helped the company achieve this impressive result.

Market Share Improves

Maruti Suzuki also strengthened its position in the Indian passenger vehicle market.

Its domestic market share increased to 41.2% during the quarter.

A higher market share means the company sold a larger portion of all passenger vehicles purchased in India.

This improvement reflects Maruti Suzuki’s strong dealer network, wide product range, and steady customer demand.

SUV Demand Remains Healthy

Sport Utility Vehicles, or SUVs, continued to support the company’s sales.

The SUV segment has become one of the fastest-growing parts of the Indian automobile market. Maruti Suzuki has expanded its presence in this category over the last few years, and the latest quarter shows that this strategy continues to deliver positive results.

Healthy SUV sales gave additional support to the company’s overall vehicle volumes.

Exports Continue to Perform Well

Maruti Suzuki also reported strong export performance during the quarter.

Exports remain an important source of business because they help the company reach customers outside India. A healthy export business also reduces dependence on one single market.

The company benefited from steady overseas demand, which added to total vehicle sales during the quarter.

Dealer Inventory Stays Low

Another positive sign in the quarterly results was dealer inventory.

Inventory remained at around 13 days, which is considered a healthy level for the automobile industry.

Lower inventory means vehicles do not remain at dealerships for long periods. This usually indicates healthy customer demand and efficient supply management.

A balanced inventory level also helps dealers manage their business more effectively.

Management Expects Better Margins Ahead

The company’s management believes that margins may improve over the coming quarters.

According to the management, pressure from raw material costs could reduce as commodity prices become more stable and supplier pricing improves.

If production costs fall while sales remain strong, profitability could recover in future quarters.

The company also maintained its FY27 sales growth guidance of around 10%.

This outlook reflects management’s confidence in customer demand and future business performance.

Capacity Expansion Supports Future Growth

Maruti Suzuki continues to invest in expanding its manufacturing capacity.

New production facilities will help the company meet future demand and introduce additional models to customers.

Higher production capacity also gives the company greater flexibility to serve both domestic and international markets.

These investments support the company’s long-term growth plans.

Investors Focus on Margin Recovery

For investors, the biggest takeaway from the quarter is the decline in margins.

Revenue growth remained excellent, and vehicle sales reached record levels. The company also gained market share and maintained healthy dealer inventory.

However, higher production costs reduced profits and operating earnings. Because of this, many investors will closely watch the next few quarters to see whether commodity prices become more stable.

If input costs ease, Maruti Suzuki could improve profitability while continuing to benefit from strong customer demand.

Final Thoughts

Maruti Suzuki’s first-quarter FY27 results tell two different stories. The company delivered outstanding sales growth, higher revenue, record vehicle sales, better market share, and healthy export performance. These achievements show that customer demand remains strong and the business continues to grow.

At the same time, rising raw material costs created significant pressure on profits. Net profit fell 10.8%, EBITDA declined 14.5%, and the EBITDA margin narrowed to 8.22%. These numbers highlight the impact of higher production expenses on the company’s financial performance.

Looking ahead, much will depend on how raw material prices move over the next few quarters. If cost pressure eases, Maruti Suzuki may see stronger margins while its healthy sales momentum continues. The company’s positive sales outlook and ongoing capacity expansion also provide reasons for optimism as FY27 progresses.
